SSAT Private School Entrance Exam
The SSAT is offered many times and at many locations throughout the year. Most students take the test in November, December, or January. It can be taken many times, and families can elect which scores are sent to prospective schools.
The SSAT is administered by the Secondary School Admission Test Board. It has a Middle Level, previously called the Lower Level, for 5th through 7th graders (applying for admission to grades 6-8), and an Upper Level for 8th through 11th graders. The SSAT Board recently introduced an Elementary Level, for 3rd and 4th grade students (applying for admission to grades 4 and 5).

ISEE Private School Entrance Exam
The ISEE is administered on an irregular schedule that varies from year to year and from state to state, but can be taken only once in a six-month period. Most students take the test in November, December, or January.
It is administered by the Educational Records Bureau (ERB). Some applicants will be familiar with the same company’s Comprehensive Testing Program (CTP, usually called simply “the ERBs”). Many private schools use the CTP for internal evaluation purposes. There are three levels of ISEE: the Lower Level for 4th and 5th graders (applying for admission to grades 5 and 6), the Middle Level for 6th and 7th graders, and the Upper Level for students in 8th grade and above. ERB recently introduced “Primary 2, 3, and 4” for students applying for admission to grades 2-4.
